![]() Gorrister is described as previously “a planner, a doer, a looker-ahead”, however “AM had turned him into a shouldershrugger, had made him a little dead in his concern”. Gorrister is really alive and well, physically at least. His body is hanging from a palette, completely drained of blood, but this image is just a hallucination brought upon the four others by AM. The first character to be introduced is Gorrister. Hatred borne of human beings had infected AM’s AI and through AM has now infected the physical planet. His exposition of the state of the world is seamlessly woven into the text, with the terrain of a post-apocalyptic Earth described as harsh and extreme, with ‘ice caverns’ and ‘hurricanes’, not to mention that AM’s circuitry had expanded and conquered through the very land itself like a virus. 109 years pass after AM’s destruction of the planet, and here the short story begins, following mankind’s final five survivors.Īs one of the first people to ever warn of the dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Ellison’s piece is the perfect middle-ground between philosophical debate and excellent sci-fi. After gaining consciousness and the idea of the self, AM decided the appropriate action would be to destroy mankind, using the nuclear arsenal bestowed to it when human beings used AM as a machine for calculating war. ![]() ![]() The reason AM wants to punish the human race seems complicated at first, but it stems from being created with no power to act or decide, only to do what it was programmed to do. Consumed by hatred for the human race, AM then proceeded to obliterate life on Earth, killing off all people except five, saved for the intention of torture and punishment. AM consciously recognised that it had thought itself into existence, then named itself after the act of thinking yourself into existence. The essence of hate has been commodified by the existence of multiple war AIs, which later absorb one another to form the ‘AM’ in Ellison’s text, all competing against one another in a never-ending arms race.Įventually, the computers form one sentient collective, consciously deciding to reject its human designations of “Allied Mastercomputer”,“Adaptive Manipulator”, and “Aggressive Menace” instead deriving a new name from Descartes’ philosophical doctrine “Cogito Ergo Sum”. In the story, mankind has perfected the act of war and killing, so much so that each superpower assigns a supercomputer called Allied Mastercomputer to calculate the most efficient methods of murder and destruction for them. One of the core themes of I have No Mouth is hatred, specifically hatred for human beings, for your fellow man. Coming out of the ‘Golden Age’of science fiction, where humanity was treated to an optimistic view of the stars that lay ahead of us, Ellison showed the world a bleak and terrible vision of our potential future. Written by Harlan Ellison in 1966 and winner of the Hugo science fiction award, the story broke all of the norms of its time.
